Two meets into their season, the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves boys’ track team appears to be in midseason form. W-MU competed Thursday in the Danville Co-Ed Track Meet, battling athletes from Danville, the Iowa Mennonite School, Louisa-Muscatine, New London, and Wapello. The Wolves left the meet as the invitational champions, scoring 162 points.

Senior sprinter Garret Baker recorded multiple first place finishes for W-MU. His 100 meter dash time of 11.7 seconds topped the 13-person field by three-tenths of a second. Baker’s 200 meter dash was clocked at 23.19 seconds, edging W-MU junior Bryce Robinson by two-tenths of a second for the top spot. Baker and Robinson teammed up with seniors Zach Davis and Ross Vantiger for the 4×100 meter relay, taking first place in the event with a time of 44.47 seconds.

The Wolves’ distance medley team came away with a first place finish as well. The crew of sophomore Alex Adams, junior Broc Mullins, freshman Brandon Snowden, and junior Gavin Bencze recorded a time of 3:59.76, a full three seconds better than the competition.

A pair of teammates finished as the top two runners in the 3200 meter run. Senior Johnathon Quinn was the first to finish the two mile run, clocking a time of 10:34.55. Bencze finished in a distant second, concluding the race in 10:55.22.

In the field events, Robinson vaulted his way to a first place finish in the long jump. His leap of 20′ 00″was over six inches longer than the competition.

W-MU returns to the track Tuesday, participating in the Mediapolis Co-Ed Track Meet. Teams scheduled to compete in the boys’ meet include Columbus, Highland, Louisa-Muscatine, Mediapolis, Mount Pleasant, New London, WACO, Wapello, and West Burlington/Notre Dame.
