The Southeast Conference soccer season for the Washington Demon boys’ and girls’ squads resumes this afternoon. The Demons welcome the Fort Madison Bloodhounds to Washington High School for a league doubleheader.

The Washington girls’ soccer team (0-5 overall; 0-1 Southeast) is still seeking win number one of the spring, dropping their first five matches. The Demons’ offense has been anemic thus far, scoring two goals in 400 minutes of game time. Washington’s girls lost their latest game Monday at Mediapolis, falling to the Bullettes, 7-0.

The Bloodhound girls’ soccer team (1-6 overall; 0-2 Southeast) is looking for their first win over an Iowa school this season. Fort Madison opened their season in the state of Missouri, earning a 1-0 victory over the Canton Tigers. Four of the Bloodhounds seven regular season games have come against competition from Missouri, and they have been outscored 17-0 against Iowa teams thus far.

The Washington boys’ soccer team got their week off on the right foot, snapping a two game losing streak with a 7-2 win over Mediapolis. The Demons have score 14 goals in their two victories this spring. Twelve players have scored at least one of Washington’s 20 goals through five games, five of whom have scored two or more. Sophomore Anthony Torres tops the Demon scoring chart with four goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Zimmer has recorded a conference-best 63 saves in the net, posting a save percentage of roughly 81 percent.

The Demon defense will be tasked with containing the highest goal scoring player in the conference through the first third of the season. Bloodhound senior Braxton Williams has scored 15 goals in six matches this season, assisting on four other Fort Madison goals. Since losing their season opener to Burlington, 2-1 on March 31, Fort Madison has compiled five straight wins, outscoring their opponents 32-3.

The Southeast Conference soccer doubleheader kicks off at 4 p.m. and the boys will follow later in the evening at Washington High School.
