There are nearly 20 million new sexually transmitted infections in the United States each year and according to the Centers for Disease Control, half of all new STDs in the country occur in people between 15 and 24 years of age. April is Sexually Transmitted Disease Awareness Month. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, in 2015 there were more than 12,000 reported cases of chlamydia in the state and 2,200 cases of gonorrhea. Of these chlamydia cases 65% were adolescents and young adults, while the same age group was 48% of the gonorrhea cases.

IDPH states reducing the number of sexual partners and consistent and correct condom use are effective prevention strategies. There are also vaccines to prevent hepatitis B and some types of HPV. Also, regular testing is important, as early detection and treatment of STDs are essential to protect health. For a list of testing locations click here.
