Elm, birch, peach, maple, oak and spruce trees will all be given away in downtown Washington Saturday. The Washington Tree Committee is sponsoring the annual event, with financial assistance form the Washington, Iowa Betterment Foundation. Residents of Washington are reminded to call 811 for Iowa One Call before digging and permits are needed from City Hall to plant trees in the terrace area between the sidewalk and street. Also, each household will be allowed one tree to ensure wide distribution of the trees across Washington. The giveaway will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and will be held on the east side of the square.
