The breakout season for Columbus junior Eric Canterero reached new heights Saturday. A pair of second half goals from the Wildcats’ striker propelled the No. 4 Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union Wildcats (17-1 overall) past the Albia Blue Demons (9-10 overall), claiming the Class 1A Substate 6 championship and a spot in this week’s state soccer tournament.

The goals were Canterero’s 29th and 30th of the season, breaking Alex Cruz’s 2014 record for most goals scored in a single season. He ranks first in Class 1A in goals scored, and has the third most goals in the entire state regardless of class. On top of leading the Wildcats in goals, he is the team’s top facilitator with 16 assists.

Last season, Canterero recorded eight goals and assisted on six others.

Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union earned the No. 6 seed in the Class 1A tournament and will open up their run at a state title against No. 3 seed Kuemper Catholic Knights of Carroll. The quarterfinal match is set to kickoff at 12:15 p.m. at the James C. Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines. Listen to KCII for play-by-play coverage.
