Iowans are reminded to grill food safely this holiday weekend to prevent food-borne illness. The Iowa Department of Public Health is cautioning Iowans to make sure food at picnics, cook outs and family get-togethers this Memorial Day weekend are properly prepared. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5,000 people die from food-borne illnesses annually.
Cook all meats thoroughly, especially ground meats like hamburgers. Cook chicken to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, ground meats to 160 degrees and steaks and pork chops to 145 degrees. Always put marinating foods in the refrigerator. Keep cold food cold and hot food hot, as bacteria can grow in many foods within two hours and in warm weather in as little as an hour.
Also, remember to wash your hands before eating; if picnicking bring soap and water, or use hand wipes so everyone has clean hands before they eat.
