The regular season came to a close on a sour note this weekend for the Cornell College Rams baseball team. Needing one win to secure their first division title in 46 years, the Rams traveled to Pioneer Park for a Midwest Conference South doubleheader versus the No. 23 Grinnell College Pioneers. The Rams left Grinnell with a pair of losses, losing game one 2-0 and game two 10-5.

The game one setback marked the first time all season the Rams’ were shutout in a game. Cornell left eight runners in scoring position, three on third base. The Pioneers’ scoring included a one-out single in the second, and doubled home an insurance run in the eighth.

Game two provided plenty of offense, including six home runs and 25 hits between the clubs. Grinnell scored six of their game-high 10 runs in the final two innings, powering past the Rams, 10-5. Sophomore Walker Breard, a 2014 Washington alum, opened the game’s scoring, a two-out RBI single in the top of the first inning.

The losses drops Cornell’s overall record to 22-14, a three-win improvement from last season. The Rams have earned a spot in this week’s Midwest Conference Baseball tournament, opening the postseason against the St. Norbert College Green Knights (19-15 overall). The game will be played at 10 a.m. Friday at Westwood Park in De Pere, Wisconsin.
