The best effort of the season for the Washington boys’ soccer team (2-8 overall) rendered a similar conference result Thursday. The Demons made the trip to Mount Pleasant’s East Lake Park for the final league match of the season versus the Panthers. Washington held a one goal lead entering the final six minutes of the game, but couldn’t hold on in a 2-1 overtime setback.

Washington freshman Matteo Hernandez opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, giving the Demons a 1-0 advantage. The score remained intact until the 74th minute when junior Ryan Hutchinson recorded the first of his two goals on the afternoon, squeaking the equalizer past sophomore Thomas Zimmer. Not even three minutes into overtime, he iced the game with the final goal of the afternoon, skipping past Zimmer into the bottom corner of the net. Four of Hutchinson’s nine goals scored have come against Washington.

Zimmer finished the game with seven saves, eclipsing the 100 save mark for the season. He leads the Southeast Conference in saves made with 105.

The Demons also had a makeup game at Fort Madison Friday evening, falling 6-1 to the Bloodhounds.

Washington returns to the pitch next Thursday in Keokuk, battling the Chiefs in a Southeast Conference battle. Keokuk defeated Washington in their first meeting this spring, 4-2, in Washington on May 5.
