The Southeast Conference soccer season continued Thursday afternoon for the Washington Demon boys’ and girls’ squads. The Demons welcomed the Keokuk Chiefs to Washington High School for a pair of league matches.

The girls’ contest was cut short as Keokuk put the 10-goal mercy rule on Washington in the 74th minute, earning the Chiefs a shutout victory. Demon sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Hora recorded nine saves in the setback. The loss drops Washington to 0-9 overall.

The boys’ match saw the teams enter halftime deadlocked at 2-2. Keokuk outscored Washington, 3-1, in the final half, propelling the Chiefs to a doubleheader sweep. Washington’s two goals came in a span of two minutes in the first half. Trailing 1-0 in the 16th minute, a handball in the Chiefs’ box forced a penalty kick against keeper Issac Dunlap. Freshman Caleb Suchan sent the shot into the back of the net, tying the contest at 1-1. Washington gained their only advantage of the game in the 18th minute when senior Christian Mejia knocked the ball past Dunlap for a 2-1 advantage.

Keokuk got the equalizer in the 38th minute as Jamin Close fired a shot past Demon goalie Thomas Zimmer, bringing the score to 2-2. Keokuk built a 4-2 lead in the 54th minute on goals by Austin West and Close. Washington’s final tally of the evening came in the 73rd minute when Jesus Velasco-Munguia scored his first varsity goal, cutting the deficit to 4-3. The Chiefs added an insurance goal two minutes later as Brendan Plate capped off the game’s scoring with a goal in the 85th minute. The setback brings Washington’s record to 2-6 overall.

Both Washington teams resume their season Monday, traveling to Fort Madison for a Southeast Conference doubleheader versus the Bloodhounds.
