After earning their first victory under new head coach Ben Obermann earlier this week, the Washington Demon softball team (1-1 overall) opens up Southeast Conference play today. The Demons welcome the Fort Madison Bloodhounds (2-2 overall) to Washington’s softball field for a pair of league contests.

Washington’s first victory of the season came Wednesday night, a 12-2 trimph over the Columbus Wildcats (0-1 overall). Junior Jessie Buchholz reached safely in two of her four at bats, driving in a team leading four runs. Junior Taylor Dicks earned the pitching victory, surrendering two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out five in four innings.

The Fort Madison Bloodhounds won their first two games of the season Wednesday in West Burlington, downing the Falcons 5-3 in game one and 12-11 in game two. Senior Kaylin Featheringill leads the team offensively in runs scored (6), hits (6) and doubles (4). Juniors Chayse Lowney and Lexi Schmidt have each thrown 13 innings on the mound this season, and both post overall records of 1-1. Schmidt leads the team with 13 strike outs, recording a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

The school’s baseball teams will also be in action tonight at Dick Sojka Memorial Field at Washington High School. The Demons (2-1 overall) have won two of their first three games of the season, while the Bloodhounds (0-2 overall) are still searching for their first win of the year. First pitch of game one of this varsity doubleheader is set for 5:30 p.m.
