The Washington Demon softball team (2-2 overall) earned a split in their first conference doubleheader of the season. As heard on AM/FM KCII and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons hosted the Fort Madison Bloodhounds (3-4 overall) in a pair of league contests Friday night at Washington’s softball field. Fort Madison took game one 13-0 in five innings before Washington bounced back for a 6-2 win in six innings.

Game one was a pitchers duel through the first four innings with the school’s starting pitchers allowing a total of five hits and surrendering no runs. The Bloodhounds’ bats became hot in the top of the fifth inning, sending 17 batters to the plate in the frame. Fort Madison scored 13 runs on 12 hits in the half innings, and forced a one-two-three defensively in the bottom of the fifth for a 13-0 final score.

The Demons bounced back in game two, getting runners on base in a variety of ways. Washington scored six runs on two hits, forcing three walks and reached base on a throwing error and one hit batter in a 6-2 weather shortened game. Sophomores Megan Mitchell and Brooke Stout scored two runs a piece in game two victory. Flashes of lightning forced a small delay in the game with the Demons leading 6-2 in the top of the sixth. The game was called a final 20 minutes after the initial delay was issued. Freshman Molly Sparks earned the win, allowing two runs on eight hits, walking three batters.

The Demon softball team returns to the diamond Thursday, traveling to Fairfield for a Southeast Conference doubleheader versus the No. 6 Trojans.
