The best athletes in the Southeast Conference shared the track Thursday in Keokuk. The Chiefs hosted the annual conference track meet Thursday, hosting boys’ and girls’ teams from Washington, Fairfield, Fort Madison, and Mount Pleasant.

The Demon girls’ track team finished third in the team standings with 76.5 points, leaving Keokuk with league bragging rights in three varsity events. Senior Kelly Wheeler was the only individual event winner for Washington Thursday night. Her 100 meter dash time of 12.92 seconds edged the field by one-100th of a second. The girls’ 800 meter sprint medley team of Makenzi Marek, Amber Salow, Wheeler, and Jenah Greiner topped the field with a time of 1:58.94, the only sub-two minute time in the event. The 4×100 meter relay crew of Marek, Greiner, Salow, and Wheeler proved to be the best in the conference, clocking a time of 52.41 seconds.

The Washington boys’ track team came away with a fourth place finish in the team results with 46 points and garnered conference championship honors for one relay event. The 4×200 meter relay crew of Ethan Hansen, Bryce Rickey, Kyle Schindler, and Jack Giardino recorded a time of 1:34.93, nearly a second better than the league competition.

The Demon track teams enter postseason competiton next Thursday, participating in the Class 3A District 5 race hosted by Mount Pleasant Community Schools. Washington will battle for automatic entrance into the state track meet against athletes from Davenport Assumption, Centerville, Clear Creek-Amana, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk, and Mount Pleasant.
