An egg grading and distribution center in Kalona cultivates over 18 million dozens of organic eggs on a yearly basis.  May is National Egg Month and The Farmers Hen House partners with over 50 Amish and Mennonite farmers in southeast Iowa and northern Missouri to provide 100 percent USDA Certified Organic eggs to stores across the nation, including 15 in eastern Iowa.

Ryan Miller is the co-owner and general manager of Farmers Hen House and says his company visits each contracted farm weekly to pick up the harvested eggs and brings them back to their facility near Frytown. The eggs are then cleaned, sized, and checked for cracks before being packaged into cartons by the dozen. Miller says his company’s process is different from the white eggs you purchase at the store, stating most regular eggs today are produced at larger, in-line complexes where the birds are on site and the eggs feed in on convener belts to the washing and packing machines.
