Kalona Elementary School decided learning should no longer be contained by four walls. As such, an outdoor classroom is nearly finished and will be ready to use in the fall. The idea was presented by the teachers to the PTO, because they felt there were numerous activities they already did outside, and an outdoor classroom would make those activities better and easier. Principal Teresa Beenblossom described the space as a classroom with benches that can turn into desks. It will also have a white board and a projector.

The construction is currently progressing with the cement pad already down, and on June 2nd the electrician and construction manager will work towards completing the rest of it. The project has been aided largely through volunteers and donations, such as the benches being built by the Mid-Prairie High School shop class. They also received a grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation for $8,500, which helped with the purchase of the white board and projector.
