Thursday was a busy day on the blue oval in Des Moines for area track athletes.

For the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks, junior Levi Duwa set a new school record in the shot put with a throw of 57’9.5″ Thursday, finishing in third place. The Golden Hawk boys 4×800 relay team of Peyton Miller, Andrew Schwartz Quinn Schmidt and Luke Sigler finished 10th with a time of 8:19.55. Golden Hawk sophomore Floyd Evans finished 12th in the 3200 with his time of 10:17.59. Mid-Prairie’s Anna Hostetler was third in the girls 3000, with a time of 10:24.42. The Mid-Prairie girls 4×800 team of Abby Tornow, Greta Schmidt, Hannah Van Roekel and Maddi Zahradnek were 21st with their time of 10:19.71. Golden Hawk senior Alex Rath was 22nd in the 200 with a time of 27.68 seconds.

For Iowa Mennonite School, Drake Brezina finished 23rd in the 400m dash with his time of 53.76 seconds.

Lone Tree junior Jovonte Squires headlined a busy day for area athletes at the 2016 state track meet in Des Moines Thursday. Squires, who entered the class 1A long jump event as the top seed did not disappoint, bringing home a state title for the Lions. His winning jump of 22’4.75″ is a new school record. The Lions shuttle hurdle relay team of Squires, Brock Smith, Caleb Christian and Niko Gosnell were 15th in the field with a time of 1:02.22.

For the Sigourney Savages Thursday Summer Barthelman was fourth in the long jump with her leap of 16’4.50″. Autum Barthelman qualified for the finals of the 100m dash, finishing third in the prelims with her time of 13.01 seconds. She will run again Saturday. The Sigourney girls shuttle hurdle relay team of Autum Barthelman, Sloane Magill, Leah Carter and Allison Schroeder were disqualified in their event.

For the Columbus Wildcats, Mauricio Ramirez advanced through the prelims of the 100m dash with his time of 11.39 in fifth place. He will run in the finals on Saturday. The Wildcat girls shuttle hurdle relay team of Anna Hamilton, Monaye Matthews, Angie Byas and Shania Boyd finished 23rd in their event with a time of 1:33.18.
