Fifth graders at Washington Township Elementary took an Iowa History field trip recently with Washington County Historian Mike Zahs.

The tour traveled through Johnson, Washington and Louisa counties. The students visited Wassonville Cemetery near Wellman to learn about symbols on grave markers and the area’s connection to the Underground Railroad. Other highlights included hiking up to Indian mounds, crossing a suspension bridge, visiting the State Theater and seeing a buffalo. The trip was organized by the Washington Township Parent Teacher Organization.
