The final tune up before Thursday’s Southeast Conference meet saw the Washington Demon boys’ and girls’ track teams compete in the Brookhart-Crew Relays hosted by Fairfield Community Schools. The six-team field consisted of athletes from Centerville, Davis County Fairfield, Fort Madison and Mount Pleasant.

The Demon girls’ track placed third in the team standings, posting 136 points and earning four event titles. Three of the four first place finishes by Washington came in relay events. The 4×100 meter relay crew of Makenzi Marek, Jenah Greiner, Amber Salow, and Kelly Wheeler clocked their best time of the spring, crossing the finish line first with a time of 51.92 seconds. The 4×200 meter relay team of Salow, Isabel Bailey, Jenah Greiner, and Kelly Wheeler clocked a time of 1:51.4, two seconds better than the field. The Demons’ sprint medley group of Marek, Salow, Wheeler, and Greiner completed the event in 1:59.23, the best time by nearly a second. Finally, senior Makenzie Knutson clocked the 400 meter hurdles in 1:12.66, topping the field by over two seconds.

The Washington boys’ track team placed fifth in the team competition, earning 73 points and winning two relay events outright. The 4×100 meter team of Jack Giardino, Bryce Rickey, Ethan Hansen, and Jose Tipia finished their race in 44.8 seconds, two-tenths of a second faster than the field. The 4×200 meter relay crew of Hansen, Rickey, Kyle Schindler, and Giardino crossed the finish line in 1:34.8, topping the competition by nearly a second.

Both Demon track teams will next be in competition Thursday, participating in the Southeast Conference Meet hosted by Keokuk Community Schools. First events are set to begin at 5 p.m. at Keokuk High School.
