Washington will be represented in several events at the annual Iowa Boys and Girls State Track Meet in Des Moines this week.The Class 3A state meet will feature the Demon girls track team in seven events while the boys’ squad qualified for two events.

Washington opens the state track meet at 9 a.m. Thursday with a pair of events. The Demon girls’ shuttle hurdle relay team of senior Carolan Hoffman, senior Emma Wood, senior Mackenzie Knutson, and junior Jessie Buchholz will take part in Heat 5 of the preliminary race. The crew claimed the district championship last week in Mount Pleasant, clocking a time of 1:08.17. While those races are taking place, senior Michael Ellingson will participate in the Class 3A boys’ high jump competition. Ellingson also captured the district championship last week, clearing 6’0″.

At 10:40 a.m. Thursday, senior Kelly Wheeler will compete in the preliminary race of the girls’ 100 meter dash. Wheeler claimed the second automatic bid to state at last Thursday’s state qualifying meet, posting a time of 12.85 seconds.

Washington resumes activities at 9 a.m. Friday when senior McKayla Miller takes part in the girls’ shot put. Miller won the district championship last week, hurling the shot 35’2.75″. The Demons’ final boys’ event takes place at 9:40 a.m. Friday when junior Caleb Bex participates in the preliminary race of the 110 meter hurdles. Bex qualified for the event on time, crossing the finish line in third place at the district meet in 15.67 seconds.

Buchholz will compete in the 100 meter hurdles at 10 a.m. Friday. Buchholz was the final athlete to qualify for the 24-person Class 3A field, clocking the 24th best time in the state at 16.43 seconds. The Demons’ 4×200 meter relay team of Amber Salow, Isabel Bailey, Jenah Greiner, and Wheeler will run in the preliminary race at 10:50 a.m. Friday. The crew qualified for state based on their time, finishing the race in 1:51.4.

Bailey concludes her first state track meet appearance at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the girls’ long jump. Bailey’s top district jump of 15’9″ was the third best at the district meet, and was among the top eight jumps in Iowa to not automatically qualify. The Demons’ 4×100 meter relay squad will run in the preliminary race at 12:40 p.m. Friday. The team of Makenzi Marek, Greiner, Salow, and Wheeler placed second in the district meet, qualifying for state with a time of 51.5 seconds.
