The West Branch Bears swept a River Valley Conference softball doubleheader with the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks Monday in Kalona.

In a pair of games heard on AM and FM KCII, West Branch used a big second inning in game one to score an 11-9 win. The Bears and Hawks traded runs in the first inning but West Branch put together a 15 batter, nine run second inning to take a commanding 10-1 lead. The Bears would add another in the 6th to stretch the advantage to 11-1. Mid-Prairie made a frantic comeback scoring four times each in the sixth and seventh innings and got the tying runs in scoring position but could not come up with the final hit they needed, falling by two. The Golden Hawks were led in game on by Alex Rath who was three for four with four runs scored. Caitlyn Riggan was two for four with two driven in. Abby Tornow took the loss in the circle, she went all seven innings, giving up eight hits, 11 runs, walking seven and striking out six. The Hawks also committed six errors in the field in the loss.

In game two, the second inning was again the difference in a 12-8 West Branch win. The Bears scored once in their half of the first and the Hawks answered with a pair. West Branch responded with five runs on four hits in the second inning to go up 6-2. West Branch would add to that lead with one run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to up 11-3. The Hawks again mounted a late comeback, scoring four times in the sixth to get within 11-7 but fell short.

Mid-Prairie was led in game two by Rath. She was two for four with a run scored and another driven in. Ali Naylor was one for three with two RBI. Cassidy Rourke took the loss in the circle, she went all seven innings, giving up 15 hits, 12 runs, walking one and striking out three. With the pair of losses Mid-Prairie is now 12-19 on the year and will next be in action Friday when they host Cedar Rapids Prairie.
