This past weekend, town festivals were held in both Kalona and Brighton, though that’s not the only thing they had in common. Both towns experienced water main breaks that resulted in temporary boil advisories. Brighton’s city wide boil order was issued early Friday morning when a water main broke and the water tower was drained. By 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning, the water samples taken came back clean so the boil order was lifted. No exact cause was given, though city officials said the pipes are old and water main breaks happen from time to time. However, they didn’t think it affected Whoopee Days adversely.

Kalona issued their boil advisory early Saturday morning for a small area in town. At 5 a.m., a water main broke in the alley behind B Avenue between 5th and 6th streets, and it affected three homes and four businesses. Despite the close proximity to the downtown area, it didn’t disrupt the Kalona Days festivities. The boil advisory will still be in effect likely until Wednesday, as city officials said there needs to be two consecutive clean tests before it can be lifted.
