Southeast Conference rivals collided on the baseball diamond Monday evening in Washington. As heard on AM/FM KCII and KCIIRadio.com, the Demon baseball team (13-9 overall) played host to the Fairfield Trojans (15-5 overall) in a pair of league contests at Dick Sojka Memorial Field. Fairfield completed the regular season sweep of Washington, winning game one, 3-0, and game two, 16-3, in six innings.

Game one featured a pitchers duel between a pair of juniors. Fairfield’s Cameron Baumann outdueled Washington’s Michael Gier, throwing a complete game shutout for his third win of the season. Baumann scattered three hits over seven innings on the mound, walking two and striking out 15. Gier takes the loss, allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out six. Of Washington’s three hits, Senior Michael Ellingson’s third inning triple was the only extra base hit recorded.

A late inning offensive explosion ended game two early. Leading 6-3 entering the top of the sixth, Fairfield brought 14 batters to the plate, allowing 10 runs to score on eight hits to give the Trojans a 16-3 advantage. Washington went one-two-three in the bottom of the sixth, allowing Fairfield to win the game via the mercy rule. Ellingson reached base safely in all three at bats in game two, scoring one run.

The Trojans swept the conference doubleheader against the Demons on June 2 in Fairfield, winning game one 3-0 and game two, 3-2 in nine innings.

The losses drops Washington’s overall record to 13-9. The Demons return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon, battling the Williamsburg Raiders (14-7 overall) in a non-conference game.
