A trip to Lee County rendered a doubleheader split Thursday for the Washington Demon softball team (5-15 overall). The Demons made their yearly roadtrip to Fort Madison, battling the Bloodhounds (12-11 overall) in a pair of games at Hoskins Field. Washington won the first contest, 4-2, before dropping game two, 11-8.

Game one was heard on AM/FM KCII. Washington fell behind 2-0 after the first inning as freshman Molly Sparks allowed a two-run home run to Kaylin Featheringill. The Demons stormed back to score four unanswered runs. A pair of lead off doubles were cashed in for single runs in the fourth and fifth inning. Eighth grader Kinsey Duwa started the scoring in the fourth, running home on a passed ball after successfully stealing third base. Sophomore Megan Mitchell led off the fifth with an extra base hit, and was plated by Sparks three batters later. The Demons took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs on two hits. Sophomore Brooke Stout sent a double into left field, plating junior Jesse Buchholz for the go-ahead run. Stout crossed home plate two batters later on an RBI single by Mitchell. Sparks took the win on the mound, allowing two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out three.

Game two provided more offense as Washington fell 11-8. The Demons held a 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Fort Madison scored three runs in the fifth, and seven in the seventh to complete the comeback victory.

The results bring Washington’s overall record to 5-15. The Demons resume their season Oskaloosa softball tournament Saturday, facing the Eddyville-Blakesburg Rockets (15-4 overall) and the Prairie City Monroe Mustangs (8-8 overall).
