Baseball bragging rights inside Washington County were on the line last night at Washington High School. As heard on AM/FM KCII and KCIIRadio.com, the Washington Demons (11-7 overall) and the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks (6-11 overall) renewed their county rivalry Tuesday at Dick Sojka Memorial Field. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Washington stormed back to score 12 unanswered runs for a 12-2 victory in five innings.

The Demons plated their 12 runs on 11 hits. Eleven of the 12 runs scored came in the third and fourth innings as Washington brought 21 batters to the plate in the two frames. Junior Noah Enfield reached base safely three times, driving a three-run home run over the left field fence in the third inning. He also scored three runs and stole a base. Junior Michael Gier picked up the victory on the mound, allowing two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out six in three innings.

The Golden Hawks’ only offense came in the top half of the first inning when sophomore Keaton Duwa sent a two-run homer over the left field fence, plating Eli Steckly. Steckly took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits, walking one, hitting three batters, and striking out one.

With the win, Washington improves to 11-7 overall, and will return to Southeast Conference play Thursday at Fort Madison (1-11 overall). The loss drops Mid-Prairie to 6-11 overall and will return to River Valley Conference play Thursday against the Camanche Indians (1-8 overall).
