A clutch hit by eighth grader Kinsey Duwa helped the Washington Demon softball team (4-14 overall) salvage a win Wednesday night. The Demons welcomed the West Burlington Falcons (7-15 overall) to Washington High School for a non-conference doubleheader. The teams split the pair of games, West Burlington won game one, 2-0, while Washington bounced back to take game two, 2-1.

Game one saw West Burlington freshman Cassie Powers throw a complete game shutout in the circle, scattering four hits over seven innings, walking no one and striking out five. Washington freshman Molly Sparks took the loss on the mound, allowing two runs on 11 hits, walking none and striking out four.

Duwa stole the spotlight in game two, going two-for-four at the plate and driving in two runs on a pair of singles. She plated eighth grader Halle Leyden in the fifth to give Washington a 1-0 lead. After the Falcons scored the tying run in the top of the seventh inning, Duwa ended the game in the bottom of the inning with a walk off base hit, scoring freshman Molly Sparks. Three of Duwa’s four runs batted in this season have been recorded against the Falcons.

The results push Washington’s record to 4-14 overall. The Demons resume Southeast Conference play today, traveling to Fort Madison for a league doubleheader versus the Bloodhounds (11-10 overall). KCII Sports will provide play-by-play coverage of game one beginning with the Washington Hy-Vee Pregame Show at 5 p.m. on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com.
