Despite several new faces across the diamond, the Highland Huskies softball team (6-0 overall) is continuing their winning ways. The Huskies have won their first six games of the season despite replacing seven starters from last season’s 23-6 squad.

Highland’s success has been predicated on their pitching and defense, entering the week they’ve allowed 11 runs through the first five games. Freshman Megan Hoenig has taken over as the Huskies’ ace on the mound, posting a 4-0 record and an earned run average of 1.00 in 28 innings pitched. She has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 18:1.

A pair of upperclassmen are leading the Huskies’ offensively. Senior Cheyann Adamson leads the team in runs batted in (9), runs scored (8), and triples (2). Junior Kelsey Hora tops the Huskies in batting average (.500), on base percentage (.550), hits (9), and stolen bases (9).

Last night, the Huskies beat the Iowa Mennonite School by a score of 11-1. Highland returns to the diamond tonight, traveling to Jesup to face the J-Hawks (6-3 overall).
