Starting this winter, the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is allowing boys basketball coaches to determine their seeding ahead of the postseason tournament. Basketball Administrator of the IHSAA Brent Nanninga is a guest on this week’s PM Sports Page and says it has been recognized by many people in the state’s basketball community that changes needed to be made to the postseason format. Nanninga said after discussions with coaches and members of the Iowa Basketball Advisory Committee, the idea of allowing all the coaches to be involved in the seeding process came up.

Nanninga says the teams a part of a district will still be determined by his office. The key difference is after the district assignments are released, the coaches will then get together for a face-to-face meeting to discuss their season and come to a consensus of what the district’s tournament seeding should be before turning it into the state for approval. The proposal was accepted by the Iowa Basketball Advisory Committee at their June 15th meeting. In recent seasons, a team’s win-loss record in games 1 through 15 or 5 through 15 determined postseason position.

Tom Squires has been the head boys’ basketball coach at Lone Tree for nearly three decades and says there’s no perfect system in seeding teams for the district and substate tournaments. However, he isn’t in favor of the seeding change, stating he believes there will be arguments between the coaches on whose conference is better.

Hear interviews with Nanninga and Squires about the new postseason basketball proposal on this week’s PM Sports Page, debuting tonight at 6 p.m. on KCII.
