A student at the Iowa Mennonite School was recognized for her letter writing ability. Freshman Lara Kliewer received an honorable mention at the 2015 Letters About Literature awards ceremony which was held at the Des Moines Public Library in May. As part of a first semester freshman English class, Kliewer wrote a letter to Neal DeGrasse Tyson about how his book, Death by Black Hole, affected her. She then submitted the letter to the national Letters About Literature Contest, which is sponsored annually by the Library of Congress. The contest is open to students in grades 4-12, and each year tens of thousands of students from across the country submit the letters they’ve written to authors.
