The Iowa Mennonite School baseball and softball team’s were champions of their 2016 IMS Classic Tournaments over the weekend.

The IMS softball team opened play Saturday pounding the Keota Eagles by a 12-3 score in five innings. IMS scored in every inning of the game, with three in the first, three more in the second, a run each in the third and fourth innings and four more runs in the fifth. Keota got their three runs in the fourth inning. Eight of the nine batters in the IMS lineup scored a run while seven of the nine collected at least one hit. Suzanna Yoder was three for three with three runs scored and an RBI. Hannah Harris got the win in the circle, she went all five innings, allowed seven hits, three runs, walked two and struck out five. Keota was led at the plate by Addison Sprouse who was three for three with a run scored.

In the championship game the Iowa Mennonite softball team met Tri-County. IMS got the title with a 7-4 win. The Trojans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first but IMS countered with three in the bottom half. Iowa Mennonite added three more in the third to build a 6-1 lead. Tri-County would get within 6-4 with three runs in the fourth but IMS got one more insurance run and held on for the win. Rubye Ney led the way in game two with her two for three performance and three runs scored. Hannah Harris collected the win going six innings, giving up four hits, four runs, walking seven and striking out seven. With the championship the IMS softball team is now 4-8 on the year.

The Iowa Mennonite baseball team opened Saturday’s IMS Classic by pounding Danville 16-6. IMS scored in every inning but one in the contest, highlighted by an eight run outburst in the fifth to give them a commanding lead of 15-1. IMS was led in the game by Blake Bontrager who was four for five with an RBI. Drake Brezina was two for five with three RBI. Isaiah Swantz recorded the win on the mound. He went six innings, gave up eight hits, six runs, walked two and struck out five.

In the DE-facto championship game Iowa Mennonite scored a walk off win over the Keokuk Chiefs 9-8. Keokuk opened the game with a pair of runs in the first and IMS answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. IMS then scored three in the second and one in the third to open a 6-2 lead. Keokuk climbed within 6-4 on a pair of runs before IMS again stretched the lead out to four at 8-4. In the fifth the Chiefs answered with four runs to tie the game at eight. The game stood even until the bottom of the seventh inning when Cole Ours opened the frame by reaching on an error. After the Chiefs intentionally walked the bases loaded Reggie Borntrager came to plate and smacked a single, scoring Ours and winning the game. In the contest IMS was led by Jacob Schmeider who was four for four with two runs scored and an RBI. Caleb Yoder got the win on the mound for IMS going all seven innings, giving up 10 hits, eight runs, walking one and hitting two batters. After the two wins the IMS baseball team is now 6-9 on the year.
