The City of Kalona recently purchased a derelict property that will be demolished and turned into a parking lot for their new community center. Before they knock it down, however, it’s getting a little bit more use. The Washington County SWAT and the Kalona Volunteer Fire Department will be given access to the building for training purposes. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said they will run scenarios inside the house. The fire department will board up the windows and use a smoke machine to train and test their equipment under realistic conditions. Schlabaugh estimates by late July the building will come down. The lot will be a staging area for the community center construction before it becomes a parking lot.
