Swimming in lakes, ponds, and rivers is a popular way to stay cool during the summer. However, Lake Darling Park Ranger Zach Haworth reminds people it’s not always as safe as swimming in pools. He said to always look at the water before you swim to see if it looks clean, if it’s murky and smells funny it’s probably a good idea to not swim there. Also it’s important to avoid swallowing a lot of water. And always shower afterwards.

Haworth added when swimming or fishing on rivers to make sure the current isn’t moving too fast for your swimming ability, and it’s a good idea to wear a life vest just in case. Finally, he said it’s important to know your own limits when swimming, especially since there’s no lifeguard stationed at Lake Darling or other natural swimming areas.
