With temperatures in the 90’s and 80’s regularly recently, the Iowa Department of Public Health is reminding Iowans to keep their health in mind. The department is telling Iowans to keep the acronym SHADE in mind for basic summer safety. S – use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and reapply it every couple of hours. H – heat safety, remember to drink lots of water and wear loose-fitting clothing to stay cool, stay in air conditioning when the mercury climbs. A – animal contact, wash your hands after touching animals and avoid stray or wild animals, as they may carry diseases, like rabies. D – DEET, use insect repellent with DEET to prevent bites from ticks and mosquitoes, which carry diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease. E – eating outdoors, be sure to grill all meats thoroughly and keep cold foods cold.
