Whether out on a lake, pond, or river, safety experts agree the best way to stay safe is to wear a life vest. Lake Darling Park Ranger Zach Haworth says to make sure to check your life vests every year to make sure they’re in good, working condition, as well as fit properly. A proper fit for a life vest is to have all straps fastened, ensuring that the vest is tight but not restrictive. It’s also a good idea to raise your arms and make sure it doesn’t come above your chin or restrict your airways.

Haworth adds another good thing to have on hand when out on a boat is a flotation device with a rope, which can be tossed into the water to help a struggling swimmer. Haworth says people need to take precautions, as many accidents on lakes, ponds, and rivers can be avoided with a little bit of forethought and by having the necessary equipment on hand.

There are many different types of life vests, so Haworth recommends conducting some research to find those that work best for you and those joining you on the boat.
