A study released by the Iowa Department of Public Health on gambling shows fewer Iowans are gambling but one in four people surveyed said they know someone whose gambling may be causing problems for him or her. Also, the behavior study estimates 1.6 million adult Iowans gambled in the past 12 months and 13% of those are considered “at-risk” meaning they may be experiencing symptoms of problem gambling. The 2013 survey showed 1.8 million adult Iowans gambling in the previous 12 months with 16% at-risk.

Problem gambling symptoms include trying to cut down or stop gambling without success, feeling irritable when trying to stop gambling, needing to gamble with larger amounts of money to get the same excitement and lying to family members or friends to hide gambling habits from them.

Also, fantasy sports players were also analyzed with 19% classified as at-risk compared to the 12% for non-fantasy sports players.
