For a third straight season, the Washington Demon baseball team (13-7 overall) came away with a sweep of a Southeast Conference foe. The Demons made their annual trip to Fort Madison, battling the Bloodhounds (1-15 overall) in a league doubleheader. Washington executed well offensively, winning game one, 17-6, and game two, 14-0. Both contests lasted five innings.

Game one saw Washington jump on Fort Madison for nine runs in the top of the first. Junior Zach Londberg fell a triple away from the cycle, going four-for-four at the plate with a double, a home run, and driving in four runs. Junior Tanner Coleman earns the victory on the mound, allowing four runs, two earned, on two hits, walking four and striking out six.

Game two also came to an early conclusion thanks to a pair of big offensive innings. Leading 1-0, Washington sent 10 batters to the plate in the second, scoring five runs on five hits to take a 6-0 lead. The Demons’ bats were rolling again in the top of the fifth as 13 batters came to the plate, scoring eight runs to push the advantage to 14-0. The play of junior Colin Zear was highlighted in game two, going two-for-four at the plate with a pair of runs batted in. Zear also was the victorious pitcher, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out seven. He threw 77 pitches in the complete game effort, 48 for strikes.

The two wins extends Washington’s winning streak over Fort Madsion to 12 games, improving their overall record to 13-7. The Demons return to the diamond Monday, hosting the Fairfield Trojans (12-5 overall) in a Southeast Conference doubleheader.
