Eighteen holes of golf stand between the Washington Demons girls golf team and another year of statewide bragging rights. The defending Class 4A girls’ golf champions opened their title defense at the Coldwater Golf Links Course in Ames, battling teams from Creston/OM, Fairfield, Mount Pleasant, Pella, Spencer, Dubuque Wahlert, and Western Dubuque. After day one of the tournament, Washington sits first in the team standings with 351 strokes, leading the field by 10 shots. Dubuque Wahlert enters day two of the tournament in second place at 361 strokes.

Sophomore Sarah Nacos, last year’s Class 4A individual champion, is the leader after day one of competition, shooting a seven over 78. Senior Deanna Peiffer sits fifth in the Class 4A field after carding a 15 over 86. Senior Brenna Burlingame had the Demons’ third best performance, posting a round of 89, tied for 11th place overall. Sophomore Megan Strabala rounded out the Demons’ scoring, finishing 18 holes in 98 strokes.

The Demons return to the course at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning for the final round of the tournament.
