The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team opened the playoffs by knocking off West Liberty Saturday night at Louisa-Muscatine High School 13-9.

In a game heard on AM and FM KCII, the Hawks struck first with a big first frame, scoring five times including a Jacob Leonard two RBI single to open up the early lead. The Comets answered with three runs in the third inning and Mid-Prairie would score once in the bottom half leaving the score 6-3 going to the fourth. West Liberty took their first lead in the top of the fourth, scoring four times to go up 7-6. The Comets would make it 9-6 with a pair of runs in the fifth. Mid-Prairie answered in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game on a Karson Gingerich double to left. The Golden Hawks took advantage of three West Liberty errors in the sixth to push across four runs and put the game out of reaching going to the seventh. On the night West Liberty made seven fielding miscues. Mid-Prairie pounded out nine hits, Karson Gingerich led and Jacob Leonard combined for five hits and four RBI. Adam Schrock got the win on the mound for Mid-Prairie going the final three innings. The Golden Hawks are now 13-18 and will next be in action Tuesday night when they travel to No. 1 in class 2A Wilton for the second round of districts.
