The best season in program history ended Friday for the Highland Huskies baseball team (24-7 overall). As heard on AM/FM KCII and KCIIRadio.com, the Huskies traveled to Principal Park in Des Moines for the Class 1A state quarterfinal round versus the Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks (31-5 overall). A five-run bottom of the sixth propelled the Hawks to a 10-5 victory over the Huskies, advancing Remsen St. Mary’s to the semifinal round next Thursday.

The Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning, scoring two runs a piece in the first two innings. Highland’s best offensive inning came in the top of the fifth, when the Huskies plated five runs on five hits to take a 5-4 lead. The rest of the scoring came from Remsen St. Mary’s, scoring the tying run in the fifth, and plating five runs in the sixth.

Junior Chase Rath took the loss in relief for Highland, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits, walking three and striking out two. At the plate, Rath plated two runs on a triple in the fifth inning. Junior Bill Burton was the only Huskies player to record two hits in the game.

The Highland Huskies season ends with a record of 24-7 overall. The Huskies lose Spencer Wieland to graduation.
