The playoff run for the Highland Huskies softball team (17-7 overall) begins on Wednesday but their opening round opponent is still unknown. The Huskies have been placed in the Class 2A Region 6 bracket, earning a bye in the first round of the tournament. The winner of tomorrow’s Pekin (12-10 overall) vs. Van Buren (8-11 overall) game will extend their season for at least 24 hours and travel to rural Riverside for a postseason date with Highland.

The Huskies won regular season meetings against both schools. Highland opened their Southeast Iowa Super Conference season at home versus Van Buren on May 24, defeating the Warriors, 12-2, in five innings. Highland met Pekin on the diamond on June 14, shutting out the Panthers, 6-0.

Wednesday’s winner will advance to the semifinal round against the quarterfinal winner of Louisa-Muscatine (23-8 overall) and Columbus (4-15 overall) on Friday in Letts. The regional championship game will be played next Monday at the home field of the highest remaining seed.
