RAGBRAI is progressing across the state, and Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar says the best idea for motorists is to avoid the routes entirely. If people’s normal commutes happen to be on the route, he says it’s a good idea to find an alternate path. That will not only keep drivers and riders safe, but will also cut back on traffic and make the highways flow better.

If encountering a RAGBRAI route is unavoidable, he advises people to take it slow and treat them like any other slow-moving vehicle. Additionally, if you must pass cyclists, make sure no one is coming in the opposite direction, know how many you’ll be passing, and avoid weaving in and out of them which endangers the riders. Finally, Dunbar urges people to remember that the race is going on, so give yourself extra time to get where you’re going.
