With RAGBRAI in full swing, it’s important for the riders taking part to make sure they’re doing everything they can to stay safe. Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar said he’s already seen riders on TV in the wrong lane, so he reminds any potential rider to stay in their lane, which is the normal direction of travel, and make sure they’re obeying the rules of the road. He also reminds riders to be careful at intersections, especially with the corn being as high as it is, and be watching for dust kicked up by incoming cars so they’re not surprised. Additionally, people should wear bright, reflective clothes, particularly orange and yellow, to make sure they’re clearly visible to motorists. Dunbar emphasized keeping people safe during the race is the responsibility of both the riders and the cars driving around them, so the most important thing is to stay alert to any possible dangers.
