For many years, the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) has mandated a moratorium period for all high school athletics from December 24 through the end of the year. The Iowa Basketball Advisory Committee recommended to the IHSAA board of control this month the option to allow teams to schedule or reschedule regular-season games or conduct a four-team holiday tournament against other schools from Dec. 27-30.

IHSSA Associate Executive Director Brett Nanninga was a guest on this week’s PM Sports Page and says the recommendation is completely optional and would open the doors for those districts who want to hold regular season games or small holiday tournaments after December 26. Nanninga says this allows additional days for athletic directors to reschedule postponed games from earlier in the season.

Lone Tree’s Tom Squires is the school district’s athletic director and boys’ basketball coach and says he has mixed feelings on the proposal. Squires admits he wouldn’t mind playing games right after Christmas, but finding personnel to help run games might be difficult over the holiday break.

Nanninga says the proposal has been put on hold at this time but will be further studied and discussed. In the future, a determination will be made to do it or simply cease discussions.
