The sixth ranked team in Class 1A softball proved to be too much for the iowa Mennonite School (7-11 overall) Wednesday evening. As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, IMS made the trip to Calamus Wheatland elementary school for a Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinal matchup versus No. 6 Warriors (24-10 overall). The Warriors strung together three big offensive innings, sending IMS into the offseason with a 13-2 loss in five innings.
Junior Calli Shaw provided IMS’ offense, going two-for-two at the plate with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Senior Jess Bender platted Shaw twice on RBI singles in her final high school athletic contest. Sophomore Hannah Harris is charged with the loss, allowing 13 runs on 10 hits, walking eight and striking out one.
Calamus Wheatland was the road team on the scoreboard, opening the game with four runs on three hits. Leading 4-1 in the third, the Warriors brought 12 batters to the plate, adding seven runs on five hits to extend the lead to 11-1. Calamus Wheatland scored their final two runs in the top of the fifth, holding IMS off the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame to initiate the mercy rule.
The win pushes Calamus Wheatland into the Class 1A Region 5 semifinal round, hosting the Sigourney Savages (15-11 overall) Friday in Calamus. The Savages advanced to the semifinals by beating Tri County (7-13 overall), 15-5.
The setback ends the Iowa Mennonite School softball team’s season at 7-11 overall.
