Rain swept across Iowa Thursday with strong thunderstorms occurring. Near Sigourney wind speeds reached 50 miles per hour, as reported by a co-op observer. The strongest wind gusts the Washington Municipal Airport recorded Thursday were at 9:35 a.m. at 28 miles per hour.
According to Accuweather, Washington received 0.85 inches of rain, a quarter inch of rain fell during the 6 o’clock hour Thursday morning. Kalona and Lone Tree observed the same amount of precipitation 1.21 inches and Columbus Junction had just over a quarter of an inch. Iowa City received over 1.3 inches of rain.
The rain caused the Iowa River near Lone Tree to rise 1.4 feet from Thursday to Friday, but it remained six feet below flood stage as of 5 a.m. Friday. Listen to KCII for weather updates.
