Severe thunderstorms that swept across the KCII-listening area Wednesday left damage caused by wind and heavy amounts of rainfall. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Washington County and the surrounding area at 2 p.m. and it ended at 3 p.m. Wind gusts reached 62 miles per hour at the Washington Municipal Airport at 2:35 p.m. Area rainfalls included 1.85 inches near Parnell, two inches in Columbus Junction, and over 3.5 inches in Conesville Wednesday. The rain caused the English River at Kalona to rise about 3.6 feet from 2 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday.

Damage included trees down in the cities of Washington and Sigourney. Also, stoplights in Washington were not working, and four way stops were set up. Six members of the KCII Severe Weather Action Team brought live coverage of the event and stood by with emergency generators, so that had the power gone off, KCII would still be on air to bring live coverage of the storms.
