Soil moisture in Iowa is mostly adequate at this time, according to the most recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In southeast Iowa, topsoil moisture is rated at 22% short, 65% adequate and five percent surplus, while 81% of the state’s topsoil moisture is adequate. Subsoil moisture is a similar story with 13% very short, 29% short and 56% adequate in southeast Iowa. Across Iowa, subsoil moisture is 82% adequate.

State Climatologist Harry Hillaker reports the statewide average precipitation was 2.09 inches, more than double the normal amount of 0.98 inches, the third consecutive week of rainfall above normal. Also, last week temperatures averaged 5.2 degrees above normal and heat indices exceeded 110 degrees. Listen to KCII for weather updates, rain is in the forecast through Friday.
