Postseason accolades continue to come in for three members of the Highland Huskies baseball team (24-7). The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released their all-district teams this week, and Highland’s Chase Rath, Spencer Wieland, and Bill Burton were all named to the Southeast District team.

Rath is the team’s lone first team selection as a pitcher, putting together a notable junior season on the mound. He entered the state tournament allowing six earned runs in 71 innings pitched and finished the year with 116 strikeouts, the fifth most in the state regardless of class. Offensively, Rath leads the Huskies in total hits (39) home runs (3), triples (5), doubles (4), and runs batted in (31).

Wieland was named the district’s second team second baseman. Highland’s lone senior put together a breakout campaign for the Huskies’, starting all 31 games. As the team’s leadoff hitter, Wieland collected 37 hits and forced a team-best 27 walks. His 53 stolen bases were the second most in the state entering the state tournament.

Rounding out Highland’s all-district honorees is junior Bill Burton as a utility player. Burton’s primary position this season was shortstop, but he did pitch 6.1 innings. At the plate, Burton recorded 37 hits, including a home run and seven doubles. He drove in 17 runs, and scored 33 more. He also stole 41 bases, ranking him sixth in the state regardless of class.

The Huskies’ season closes with a record of 24-7 overall, marking the most wins in school history. Highland loses Wieland to graduation.
