The winningest season in program history resulted in six members of the Highland Huskies baseball team (24-7 overall) earning all-conference recognition. The Huskies, who finished second in the SEISC standings to Van Buren, landed two players on the first team, two on the second team, and two more athletes were named all-conference honorable mention selections.

Highlighting Highland’s first team all-conference performers is senior Spencer Wieland as an infielder. Wieland had a breakout year as the Huskies’ second baseman, starting all 31 games on the right side of Highland’s infield. Wieland collected 37 hits as the leadoff hitter, and forced a team-best 27 walks. His 53 stolen bases were the second most in state entering the state tournament.

Junior Chase Rath is Highland’s other first team all-conference selection as a pitcher. Rath entered the state tournament allowing six earned runs in 71 innings pitched. He finished the season with 116 strikeouts, ranking him fifth in the state regardless of class. Rath lead the Huskies in total hit (39) home runs (3), triples (5), doubles (4), and runs batted in (31).

Junior Garrett Colbert made the second team All-SEISC squad as a catcher. Colbert started all but one game behind the plate for the Huskies, posting a 1.000 fielding percentage. He threw out 11 players trying to steal bases. Posting a .289 batting average, Colbert drove in 25 runs, second most on the team. He collected 26 hits this season, including four doubles.

Junior Bill Burton joins Colbert on the second team all-conference squad as an infielder. Burton was the team’s primary shortstop, posting a .911 fielding percentage. At the plate, Burton recorded 37 hits during his recent campaign, including a home run, seven doubles, drove in 17 runs, and scored 33 more. His 41 stolen bases ranks as the sixth most in the state regardless of class.

Juniors Caleb Brase and Josh Michel were both selected as honorable mention selections. Brase alternated between pitching and third base, while Michel pitched and covered first base.

The Huskies’ season concludes with a record of 24-7 overall, the most wins recorded in program history. Highland loses Wieland to graduation.
