With the Iowa Shrine Bowl in the rear view mirror, recent Winfield-Mount Union graduate Sam Jennings is turning his focus to freshman college football season at Upper Iowa University next month. Jennings joined this week’s PM Sports Page to talk about his involvement in the 2016 Iowa Shrine Bowl and his decision to play college football at Upper Iowa University.

Jennings was one of 16 recruits to a sign a letter of intent with the Peacocks in early February, and he enters fall camp trying to make the team as a linebacker. Jennings told KCII Sports he went on four game day visits to schools interested in his talents, and chose Upper Iowa University for the institution’s class structure and athletic facilities.

Jennings was the Class 1A District 6 most valuable defensive player as a senior last fall, leading the league with 106 total tackles. He also intercepted three passes, returning two for touchdowns, and recovered three fumbles. His efforts helped the Wolves finish the year 10-1 overall, and clinched a district championship for the first time since 1999.

The new season of Upper Iowa Football kicks off September 1 when the Peacocks travel to Bemidji, Minnesota, to face the Bemidji State University Beavers.
