Nationally about six million students are involved in 4-H and this week local 4-H’ers are taking part in the Washington County Fair. Students are showing a variety of projects from livestock to woodworking, from photography to dog obedience and they can all be seen at the fairgrounds. Vice President of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Cathann Kress visited the fair Monday and she said they’re seeing more and more students who don’t have access to farm or grow up on a farm, so 4-H is an opportunity for young people to learn about agriculture and the potential careers in the agriculture industry. She adds, “It’s a youth program, but it’s more than that, it’s a family program and it’s a community program.”

This year’s overall grand champion in dog showmanship is Cheyenne Sedlacek and top senior livestock judge is Logan Sieren. In the goat show, grand champion meat goat doe is Hayley Sweeting and grand champion dairy goat went Brent Foster. This year’s fair queen is Anna Pence.
