There is an increase in traffic enforcement across Iowa planned for August 23rd through September 5th. The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau warns drivers who are impaired put anyone sharing the roadway with them at higher risk of being in a crash and they’re workign to remove such dangerous drivers. This time of year is busy with summer coming to an end with last minute family vacations, shopping trips, end of summer celebrations and Labor Day festivities. Nearly a third of traffic crash fatalities in Iowa involve drunk drivers. During the 2014 Labor Day holiday weekend, 40% of fatalities in crashes across the United States involved drunk drivers, the highest percentage in over five years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports seat belts save over 13,000 lives per year. Drivers and passengers are urged to wear seat belts.
